Dina Southwell

VIEW WORKS | BIOGRAPHY

Dina Southwell’s paintings are about expressing her experience of landscapes she knows and loves. She constructs these in her studio from a combination of sketches, photos, colour studies and memory. Colour is often the starting point and very much determines the composition. She aims for an equivalent to her feelings about the landscape rather than a detailed realistic study and many of her paintings or collages end up completely abstract. She works in a wide variety of media from collage, silkscreen, oil pastel, watercolour and oil paint and very much likes to vary the scale depending on what the idea demands.

Dina Southwell studied at the Slade school of art in the 80’s ( BA hons ) and at the University of New Mexico. Since then she has combined painting with teaching art. She taught at Holland Park school in London and now runs private classes from her studio by the Stour in Bradfield Essex. She has exhibited widely in East Anglia and London.
