Cobbold and Judd are delighted to present an online exhibition of East Anglian artists. Jill Barthorpe trained at the Slade and her warm and lyrical works are painted with great sensitivity, the result of acute observation and skilled draughtsmanship. Buckmaster and French’s serene Tree Portraits are etchings of native tree species printed on paper made from the tree’s own leaves. Luke Elwes’ paintings focus on the tidal marshes of Essex and the continual ebb and flow of light and water over the salt flats and the maze of creeks and channels. In long, fluid pencil marks across the page, Jason Gathorne-Hardy portrays the dynamism of the Black-Headed Gull in flight in a new series of drawings. Maggi Hambling captures the power and energy of the North Sea in works of great strength and beauty. In her new series of paintings cormorants merge with the waves. Inspired by the shorebirds and wildlife of the Essex marshes where he lives, Stephen Henderson’s sculptures are carved from pieces of found wood and pine and mounted on driftwood and natural weathered timber. The watercolours of Tory Lawrence reflect her abiding interest in the natural world. Exploring and developing colour relationships is an ongoing fascination for Jane Lewis, and her abstract paintings glow with colour and inner light. Arabella Shand’s paintings sparkle with colour and pattern.
