Simon Carter is an artist and curator born in Chelmsford, Essex in 1961. He studied at Colchester Institute (1980-81) and North east London Polytechnic (1981-84). He lives and works on the North East Essex coast. In 2013 he collaborated with artist Robert Priseman to form the artist-led group Contemporary British Painting and East Contemporary Art, the first dedicated collection of contemporary art from the east of England which is now housed at the University of Suffolk, Ipswich. Carter is President of Colchester Art Society and has been Artist-in-Residence at Essex University and Firstsite, Colchester.
Recent exhibitions have included Made in Britain at the National Museum of Poland, Gdansk, British Contemporary at Yantai Art Museum, China both in 2019. A solo show at Messum’s London and at Messum’s Wiltshire in 2018. Approaching the Remote a solo show at The Minories Gallery, Essex in 2017 and a solo show at SEA Foundation, Tilburg, Netherlands in 2016. Carter’s work can be found in numerous collections including Abbot Hall, Cumbria, The China Academy for Art, Hangzhou, China, Falmouth Art Gallery, the Jiangu Museum of Art, China, Madison Museum of Art, USA, Paintings in Hospitals, Rugby Museum and Art Gallery, Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, Yantai Art Museum, China and the Yale Centre for British Art, USA.
